Roosevelt Field Mall. Long Island. ‪#‎TheLimited‬.

When I arrived before 6p yesterday, multiple women were waiting for me. After the reading, questions turned to personal confessions on fears in love and outlooks on life. It was excellent! ‪#‎LeadingLooksLike‬ #TheLimited

Testimonial #14: The Truth about The Man Curse.

As a man, I first thought The Man Curse was bashing men, but after reading the book I have to say it was a great read. The first few pages grabbed my attention… I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to relive the era of the 90s and the trials that we had to overcome for success whether professional or personal.

Raqiyah Mays Unravels ‘The Man Curse’ [INTERVIEW] via Ebony.com
[Words by: Alexandra Phanor-Faury]

When author, journalist, radio personality and activist Raqiyah Mays was growing up, she’d often hear women in her family whisper about a curse that had befallen them. They’d call it “the man curse.” “The women would talk sarcastically and jokingly about how this man curse kept them single and unmarried,” shares Mays.
While the tone may have been light and fun at the Mays’ household when the matriarchs discussed the curse, in the author’s debut novel, The Man Curse, Mays takes a thought-provoking look into the damaging effects of accepting generational hexes as truth through protagonist Meena.

A WOMAN OF MANY TALENTS, RAQIYAH MAYS SETS SIGHTS ON TAKING OVER FICTION
[Words by: Adrian “A.D.” Dubard]

Success, like a fine wine takes time and patience to both happen and appreciate. Anything that comes too easy or without some sort of struggle or sacrifice most likely won’t be around for a long time. In the modern age of immediate gratification of the “Get It Now Generation,” we’re starting to lose sight of long term goals in favor of what we can have now. More than likely if something takes too long or doesn’t happen within our expected timeframe then many of us get frustrated and lose all hope of ever achieving greatness.

It took the last 10 years of one woman’s life to craft her literary masterpiece, a revolutionary book to help the modern woman in need. With the launch of her debut novel, The Man Curse, author/journalist/activist/radio personality Raqiyah Mays hopes to inspire women to take charge of their relationships by empowering them to make their own course in life. Taking a break from her busy schedule, Raqiyah was able to sit down with us at Parlé to discuss her book and career.

Testimonial #12: The Truth about The Man Curse.

“This book had me fully engaged from the very first page. It was a refreshing read and I loved that Ms. Mays touched on subjects that people feel are a taboo to discuss. The best part is that I didn’t need an ‘ebonics’ dictionary to comprehend the story line. Phenomenal job Raqiyah! I’m already looking forward to your next book.”

Testimonial #11: The Truth about The Man Curse.

“I absolutely adored this book. A lesson in every chapter and a blessing to have been able to indulge in it. Kudos to Raqiyah for touching on subjects that black women in particular do not like to discuss such as abuse, disease, family drama, therapy and depression. The healing begins when we talk about it! Well done…”

YOU NEED TO KNOW: “THE MAN CURSE” AUTHOR RAQIYAH MAYS
[Words by: Ricardo Hazell]

It wasn’t that long ago that journalist, radio personality and activist Raqiyah Mays was doing battle down in the trenches of the entertainment industry here at The Shadow League as our head of entertainment. But with time comes growth and since her departure, our good friend has rekindled her love for broadcast radio as a personality over at WBLS in New York and completed her first novel “The Man Curse” on Simon & Schuster to great fanfare.

The book’s protagonist is a young woman named Meena who is doing her very best to separate herself from her family’s legacy of husbandless, bitter matriarchs. Mays is currently on a whirlwind book tour across the Northeast but I was able to get her to slow down just a bit to talk about “The Man Curse,” which has been showered with praise from the media. Check out the Q&A session below.
